"Deckie with a Difference"

"Land was created to provide a place for boats to visit."

Having spent many years teaching in New Zealand, Scotland and Spain, the transition from the turbulent waters of the education sector to the equally vibrant world of the yachting industry has been rewarding, and I look forward to enjoying future opportunities.

I am put myself forward as a "deckie with a difference", and I am confident that the skill set I possess would be an asset to any yacht be it either power, or sail.

You can. You should. And if you are brave enough to start, you will.

- Stephen King

My Story

Growing up on a sheep farm in rural South Island, New Zealand, the ocean was not one of my natural habitats. Rugby fields and rivers played a greater role in my upbringing. Having finished University and setting off a European OE experience and chasing the rugby dream, after a quick stop-off back in NZ to have 3 kids and get married, Mallorca ended up being a home away from home for our family. So, it was inevitable that the call of the sea would come. Taking advantage of all that Mallorca has to offer, it's mountains, roads and waves have proved to be an excellent playground. And it is on these waves that my recent adventures have taken off. Surf-ski racing has given the body a chance to recover from the punishment of ultra-marathon mountain running, while fulfilling the need to be on the water. And while it was teaching that has been at the forefront for the past 25 years, that chapter has come to an end. Having started my teaching career in Scotland, followed by New Zealand and ending here in Spain, I have been fortunate to have held a number of senior and middle management positions, as well as enjoying the day to day bustle as a classroom teacher. Once our three children finished secondary school, and having had the privilege of being able to play an active role in their education, the change was made to fulfil some personal dreams! The transition from relative-landlubber to seafarer has been a positive experience, one that has suited perfectly my adventurous nature. Fueled by goal-driven motivation, a never-say-die attitude and having the backing of an extremely supportive family have all assisted me in my endeavours, and I have no doubt that the next adventure will enable me to continue my personal growth while benefiting whichever crew I am lucky enough to join.
